Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity is at a level where it is out of control. Who's to blame isn't important right now. What is important is that you know and understand what childhood obesity is, and the effect it is having on your child. Here are some startling childhood obesity facts.

The most startling fact is the number of obese children has doubled in the past 20 years. With the invention of technology and video games, children and teens have less motivation and desire to get outside the house.

Diet is a huge factor in overweight children as well. The fact is, we no longer feed our kids healthy meals. In our society, both mom and dad usually have to work in order to survive. This leaves the children to fend for themselves. What's the easiest thing for them to fix? Things like cereal, chips, candy, hot-dogs and processed microwavable meals high in sodium are all common foods of our children.

With the alarming number of children becoming obese, there are also an alarming number of children developing diseases. These diseases include:

  • Type-2 Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Levels of Cholesterol
  • Liver Disease
  • Sleep Apnea
Thirty years ago it was unheard of for children to have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Now, it is just a fact that many parents live with. Kids are having to take blood pressure medicine during adolescence!

Aside from the medical conditions associated with childhood obesity, their are numerous social factors. Overweight kids have problems fitting in with other kids and end up stigmatized, teased and bullied in many cases. Because of this, it is common to see these kids develop extremely low self esteem.

Think about it. With healthy kids running around the playground or the gym, overweight kids can't keep up.  Instead, they lag behind or sit out altogether. Children who feel left out from the crowd or bullied, might distance themselves from people. Doing this can cause them to take longer to develop social skills thus compounding the problem. The lack of proper social interaction can lead to anger problems, depression and in extreme cases even suicide.

Childhood obesity isn't a disease that just effects the children. Most overweight children retain and even increase their weight through adulthood. This just compounds the severity of the obesity related illnesses.

Kids who are obese have the world against them. They need help. They need your help! The problem isn't going away, and it must be addressed. Don't put this off any longer. Get help for your children now.

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Dear Friend,

Believe me; I know what it feels like to want to be in shape. In fact, I used to want it so badly I would even have dreams of seeing myself in my perfect body. I was overweight, unhealthy, and worst of all, MISERABLE about who I was, and what I looked like. I was as likely to go to the beach as I was to jump in a bed of nails, because I was so embarrassed of how I looked.
Then something clicked in me.
I don’t know what it was, but all of the sudden I was inspired to do something about my misery, and get in shape, and get into a healthy way of life.
I researched hundreds of different ways of getting into shape, and from my research, accidentally stumbled upon a system of working out that actually WORKED!
Pounds were dropping off of me so fast that I needed a new wardrobe EVERY MONTH (which was really expensive, but a sacrifice I loved to make!).
I taught it to my friends, and they experienced the same results. I taught it to my family, and it worked for them too! It was then that I knew I had to teach as many people as I could because it will make your dreams of being in shape COME TRUE.
I only have a few spots left so hurry and sign up now and you can bring a friend along ABSOLUTELY FREE!
Best,

Help Me to Help You!

About 95% of all participants in an exercise program will stop exercising. Why? No support. Research has shown that exercisers with some kind of support system have a better chance of continuing exercise. You need someone who will also hold you accountable for your exercise. Working with someone like a personal trainer, a coach or a mentor will give you the support you need and you can work together to identify barriers to keeping your commitment and develop strategies to overcome these obstacles. Most people need far more support, follow up and accountability than they think to start and maintain an exercise program.

Just like results from exercise, building motivation and consistency will take time. Fitness is not just about reaching a destination, it is a journey where you will learn much about yourself and grow from your experiences. Keep your short term goals in mind, and enjoy the journey to reaching your ultimate goals.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late To Make That Change!

In February of 2009 I lost my mother to esophageal cancer. She had just "beaten" breast cancer when they discovered a 2nd primary cancer in her esophagus that had already metastasized to a stage 4 level. It was deemed "inoperable". At the time that this was discovered my mother weighed almost 300 lbs and I was fast closing in on 200. My mom was 5' 7" and I am only 5' 2" so we were both morbidly obese. The only reason an operation to try to save my Mom's life was not possible, was because of the extra weight. One would think this would be an automatic wake up call to me, but it took another 2 years and losing her after a grueling battle with a most vicious form of cancer to give me my AHA (as Oprah calls it) moment.

In January of 2010, almost a full year after Mom's death, I walked into a weight watchers meeting desperate for help. I had been grieving for a year and was over 230 lbs. I knew something had to be done. I am 100% positive that my Mom guided me in there that day. I was always very private, avoided groups of people like the plague, and viewed asking for help as a weakness, so this was extremely out of character for me. The group "leader" that evening was Lori, and I briefly told her how I had gotten where I was and in the process of exchanging information, found out that her husband had just (within the last week) been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. She also has no thyroid (like myself) and assured me that they could help. I ended up joining that night, and it has completely changed my life.

Although I am no longer an active member of weight watchers, I am thankful that they started me off in the right direction on my fitness journey. I have since lost close to 70 lbs (still have 40 to go), but more importantly, I now realize the importance of health and fitness in your lifestyle! I am determined to pay this forward and help everyone I can which is why I started Kickin' It!. For every person that our organization transforms, that is one more Niece, Nephew, Sister, Brother, Grandchild or Child that can still be there for their family and learn to fully enjoy a healthy lifestyle!

I am so sorry that it took the death of my Mother to lead me on this journey and that I am too late to help her, but somehow I know that she would be very proud to know that something good came out of a horrible disease that she battled with extreme courage and grace.

I love you Mom!

Follow these 4 Simple Steps for a GUARANTEED New Healthy You!!!

Change Your Mindset
The first thing that you should do is change your mindset when it comes to eating, dieting and living a healthy lifestyle. From here on out, do not start a diet. Start living a healthy lifestyle and learn how to incorporate a healthy plan for eating into your life. Temporary diets do not work. However, learning how to eat healthy meals that you can eat for the rest of your life does. This is the only way that you will finally lose weight and keep it off.
Eat in Moderation
Learn how to eat everything that you want in moderation. You do not have to give up carbs, sweets, dairy products or any other type of food or drink that you love and crave. The key is to figure out how to eat all of these things in moderation so that you are living a healthy lifestyle. Once you figure this out, you will start to see the pounds just drop off.
Run, Skip, Hop-Exercise
Understand that the process involves eating healthy and exercising as well. Why not start an exercise routine every morning? Do you realize how much weight you could lose if you made the commitment to exercise just 4 mornings per week? Of course, you might have to start with baby steps and begin this process by walking around the block a few times a day. But, healthy exercise such as the bootcamps we offer at www.semperfitme.com will really help to burn fat and lose weight. You can start slowly at our beginners level or if you are already relatively active, step it up a notch or two and try our intermediate or advanced level bootcamp! This new habit will really help to take the weight off and keep it off!
Don't Keep Up with the Joneses
Stop trying to do everything that everyone else is doing. People are different. What works for the model on television might not work for you. The lady down the street might have used The ABCXYZ diet to lose weight, but who says the same will happen for you? Develop a way of eating that works for you. Concentrate on how to eat in moderation and how to incorporate exercises like running into you daily lifestyle. Don't follow all of the latest trends and fads. Live a healthy lifestyle instead.
However, the most important thing that you can do is to learn that losing weight is not just about going on a diet for two weeks and expecting to keep it off. You must learn how to live a healthy lifestyle so that the weight never comes back on. Hopefully, these simple weight loss tips will help you to finally get those pounds off for once and for good!
